Handful of Sunshine: A Reflective Poem on Smile | Thursday Verse No. 6

“Smile is the curve that sets everything straight,” is a quote I have lived by since I first heard it during a school assembly on Smile Day. Since then, I have tried to embody it in spirit and action. But occasionally, I would question its nature.
This poem is one such contemplation on the nature of smiles, and the pauses between each of them.

Handful of Sunshine

Keep it safe,
The curve of your lips
that redden the space
between your chin and your sparkling gaze.

Keep it safe,
Lest volatile Mx. Life
wipes off your lovely face
the electricity that powers your livelong days.

Keep it safe,
But in the pursuit
You'll watch it fade,
Under the apprehension of a greater dismay.

Or you could

Let it escape,
and let it smoothly evade,
the grasp of your effortless chase,

Let it escape,
The walls of thoughts,
wishing upon a sunshine
which will last through nights and days,

Let it's escape,
Empty a place,
For you to hold
what's poured in with peace and grace.
